I haven't really been able to find one that does what I want exactly and while Spoonflower doesn't carry silk, they do carry very fine cotton. Truly a learning experience!</div><div style="text-align: justify;"><br /></div><div style="text-align: justify;">However, the good news is that I've been looking for some artwork to hang over our bed that would tie together our sage leather recliners and rug which has a range of pinks with touches of aqua/sage.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifqJiLt-pTtnTFJ8A2j96AK86zwwf1_LBNmdD2SwOrmxvsGqsVwl3bRT-WRg-Sf8-Gzzfl5QzFx37IWQ9wWjhaCjRx6m5LMGZ8nIDZnlbBVVpZ0iUdus_1S0cItVJZc7tMybDBOrAJU66Gj4vm8-SpJLKpk24PtpYsjSOYR8udgiCswhtXlXE/s1089/first%20print_inPixio.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1089" data-original-width="759" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEifqJiLt-pTtnTFJ8A2j96AK86zwwf1_LBNmdD2SwOrmxvsGqsVwl3bRT-WRg-Sf8-Gzzfl5QzFx37IWQ9wWjhaCjRx6m5LMGZ8nIDZnlbBVVpZ0iUdus_1S0cItVJZc7tMybDBOrAJU66Gj4vm8-SpJLKpk24PtpYsjSOYR8udgiCswhtXlXE/w446-h640/first%20print_inPixio.jpg" width="446" /></a></div><br /><div style="text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;">! Suffice it to say that it took hours but I finally figured it out so here we are - a learning experience</span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #999999;">Now on to the important things! The Fiber Guild of the Savannahs had their Golden Anniversary a few weeks ago and the members banded together to make it special and it was! I was inspired by the Queen's Jubilee after I saw some women create a huge bed of textile flowers as a tribute to her. Of course, it probably took them a couple of years to do as many as they had and we had only a couple of weeks. The guild meets at Oatlands Museum in Savannah and they kindly give them a room and allow them to meet there as well. In return, the guild makes things for their gift store to help them out as it is mainly staffed by volunteers. The person in charge of the event loved the idea of the flowers and we had several discussions on how to accomplish something worthy in such a short time frame. </span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #999999;">I offered to create a wet felted background that was to be attached to a movable frame since we are in a shared situation. I used a green wool background with brown branches and leaves that were stitched as well as a few sheep's locks to add interest. </span><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXVgxiETrHjIjHhKhvrXtzj9uyRUJY998omEKXgAM_DBDia_EsvJYsaGVkQRnpqHIVFPtaOAcuZxPLff3Mg82M5do06mg5UOtjHzyg84SDshJCeE3teKbe0i_LpUh51e3kACZicWqHui4omCORI5p60ce37Ygo0oSELRkeM4ow35TBFN-nmbI/s2048/Golden%20Swag.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXVgxiETrHjIjHhKhvrXtzj9uyRUJY998omEKXgAM_DBDia_EsvJYsaGVkQRnpqHIVFPtaOAcuZxPLff3Mg82M5do06mg5UOtjHzyg84SDshJCeE3teKbe0i_LpUh51e3kACZicWqHui4omCORI5p60ce37Ygo0oSELRkeM4ow35TBFN-nmbI/w640-h480/Golden%20Swag.jpg" width="640" /></a></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCDTZKbuwKTu3DlrEEbPS_WNinIU0k1WqS8ges6gnA0d9BaqQ07_Qza0sqQ_G3Mq86PagzXQJ3oPaDdHIprpJlBw86T0ynmiYqTHnhbjgfs0VqJKjxQg5oUIbJCaie6F7nhihSNPYO_ne-NO5YJQIPLkQZhZm8VBh288jjJjnJerDaCevc-xg/s3264/Golden%20Flowers.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiCDTZKbuwKTu3DlrEEbPS_WNinIU0k1WqS8ges6gnA0d9BaqQ07_Qza0sqQ_G3Mq86PagzXQJ3oPaDdHIprpJlBw86T0ynmiYqTHnhbjgfs0VqJKjxQg5oUIbJCaie6F7nhihSNPYO_ne-NO5YJQIPLkQZhZm8VBh288jjJjnJerDaCevc-xg/w200-h150/Golden%20Flowers.jpg" width="200" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXYYJFDcYSG9z6shpMdheD-AkzbP3rWwotDu3164E5N_LpxedDnIzQH4OIWS5TRIG8fZIknZpMG_GN9hQ6k8fYm-IjfFKbfzofceHYPZdaHcjM6UEmB_gWol79HQW7GKkuUBsuK8vZ6wD4JisRpr3m1p_RDCVT8cEpc-joqkb82299aI4RUAs/s3264/Savannah%20Guild%20Anniversary.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXYYJFDcYSG9z6shpMdheD-AkzbP3rWwotDu3164E5N_LpxedDnIzQH4OIWS5TRIG8fZIknZpMG_GN9hQ6k8fYm-IjfFKbfzofceHYPZdaHcjM6UEmB_gWol79HQW7GKkuUBsuK8vZ6wD4JisRpr3m1p_RDCVT8cEpc-joqkb82299aI4RUAs/w200-h150/Savannah%20Guild%20Anniversary.jpg" width="200" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXqkzP1jf77O4AI_QnR7EUc0yCZg_bxiQkf-rjCkOYaSxU8UouWhlJxka_OnAjJKNAli_VW_b8xIrPHLspNz_ebGftrNbFe1yUyRkJiOJIbk9tdlKZh_ZPXWBwowDyD3WabHw7Jh2A4Y4q2ojOGEHJ2HkIaCBwoHr_ueb3Dpg437RJfdzw9CI/s3264/felted%20golden%20anniversary%20background_inPixio.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2448" data-original-width="3264" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiXqkzP1jf77O4AI_QnR7EUc0yCZg_bxiQkf-rjCkOYaSxU8UouWhlJxka_OnAjJKNAli_VW_b8xIrPHLspNz_ebGftrNbFe1yUyRkJiOJIbk9tdlKZh_ZPXWBwowDyD3WabHw7Jh2A4Y4q2ojOGEHJ2HkIaCBwoHr_ueb3Dpg437RJfdzw9CI/w200-h150/felted%20golden%20anniversary%20background_inPixio.jpg" width="200" /></a><br /><span style="color: #999999;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">Cecilia Ridge who is also a guild member painted the top banner on silk and it is quite lovely. Since the last post, I've been working on some projects for entries. First, I was invited to enter the Hilton Head Library Garden Club poster contest. I had a piece I'd been working on and off between other things, so I decided that "Early Bird" would be the entry. When I read the criteria, I read that the piece should be a rectangle and my piece was mostly square at that point. I decided that it needed more interest at the top and I wasn't so crazy about the flower either. </span></div><div class="separator" style="text-align: justify;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimzUAC02vlxVzj_O2CuK-8m7xpuLa8cuVG7wkGTLuWxb4aKMEXhg947uYx3N6Pi2EaSGRy3GD63GnpuqMtGNPGFnIggmv56zF2wOBL0WKGBORDTmlLru2SB3a7WWtHU4kx1B6gzvyGjVfHw9pK0AKMRgRu8aHC-xtZ548vr5XcrPspyA5nSzg/s2048/blue%20bird.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="200" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEimzUAC02vlxVzj_O2CuK-8m7xpuLa8cuVG7wkGTLuWxb4aKMEXhg947uYx3N6Pi2EaSGRy3GD63GnpuqMtGNPGFnIggmv56zF2wOBL0WKGBORDTmlLru2SB3a7WWtHU4kx1B6gzvyGjVfHw9pK0AKMRgRu8aHC-xtZ548vr5XcrPspyA5nSzg/w150-h200/blue%20bird.jpg" width="150" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #999999;">It always helps me at least to just keep works in process close by until it usually tells me what it needs. Then I had to figure out how best to frame it. I really liked this frame for its rustic look but it is a bit heavy and placing it in the center since it had a dip would be a problem, so the answer came in a</span><span style="color: #999999; text-align: left;"> purchased canvas that was 14", the exact size of the inside square and I covered it with the same shade of green silk. This allowed the garden piece to sit on top and be secured using double-sided sticky tape. I didn't win anything; however, an artist friend fell in love with it so we bartered for one of her gorgeous paintings - a win-win situation! Who knew retirement would be so busy! </span></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #666666;">This summer really whizzed by so quickly and it was so hot and humid, that I barely was able to work outside in my dye tent experimenting with printing botanicals and natural dyeing. Thank goodness that I have a wonderful studio filled with silk and wool and that kept me busy indoors.</span><span style="color: #666666;"> </span><span style="color: #666666;">I was so enthralled building a stash for our new Maye River Gallery opening - of course, this</span></span><span style="color: #666666;"><span style="font-size: large;"> includes experiments (such fun!) such as heat setting polyester that I haven't done before. The first pleated scarf I made and posted on Facebook sold immediately! Who knew polyester would be so popular - maybe it was the color or the cool pleated texture! I had purchased a shibori tutorial from Ana Lisa Hedstrom years ago that I had never viewed and at the very end, she used a pleating machine and polyester so, of course, I just had to try it! Then on Pinterest, I saw a bubble necklace so I had to try that too! If you treat silk or wool the same way, they will lose the effect when they get wet but not the poly!</span></span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; font-size: x-large; text-align: center;"><span><span style="color: #666666;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAzmpfBbesy_vqaNBom1ZtnNH2jgEpvSfO6D3z7LKrZYcGIZLejqd36aLtKDJBRC3A2Gq2piOqSvP1QJ0REBt-LlWfim9QZpkNvmBHow5yZudakXKOFArNLspcB9XvrepKVDShSFbWO2CeaOlp1qoDHebNTA58gEoAKY3wNwIDZHmK25SAz44/s828/poly%20bubbles2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="621" data-original-width="828" height="150" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAzmpfBbesy_vqaNBom1ZtnNH2jgEpvSfO6D3z7LKrZYcGIZLejqd36aLtKDJBRC3A2Gq2piOqSvP1QJ0REBt-LlWfim9QZpkNvmBHow5yZudakXKOFArNLspcB9XvrepKVDShSFbWO2CeaOlp1qoDHebNTA58gEoAKY3wNwIDZHmK25SAz44/w200-h150/poly%20bubbles2.jpg" width="200" /></a></span></span></div><p></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="font-size: large;"><span style="color: #666666;">I do have quite a few felted and botanical printed pieces all ready. </span><span style="color: #666666;">Alas, although the beautiful new space in the desired location was selected and all the details ALMOST finalized, disappointingly it didn't work out as we had hoped. However, I do believe that can be a blessing in disguise and other wonderful things are just waiting. The gallery sisters were all so excited and our gallery mom, Judy, and her helpers had worked so hard all summer with <i>endless</i> meetings to ensure that things would go perfectly smooth. Our grand opening was planned for the Bluffton Art Festival which would have been just perfect, and had excited to display a billboard created by my Beaufort Fiber Guild (FAB) It's a spectacular work of art in which each guild member played a part. </span></span></p><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #666666; font-size: large;">Monet's painting was divided up into sections with members each given a piece with a number. We created our individual piece using our own expertise - we have a very talented group - weavers, silk painters, a basket weaver (who created the bridge!), and both needle and wet feltmakers. It was then pieced to a backing and framed and we are very proud of it! Since that didn't work out, "Monet Medley' will be auctioned off as a fundraiser in April 2023 to benefit Hopeful Horizons, which is a children's advocacy, domestic violence, and rape crisis center with a starting bid of $500. Guild members hope to represent FAB at the auction! The picture doesn't really do it justice! I must be seen in person to appreciate the color and texture - we were really able to capture the essence of Monet's painting and we are quite proud!</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGgznn4ETxLbaqpnH5WHGTDMrJP02xP-cBhY0esfwmzrUjLfiUR0afo7dEy1gpk3TizwbQGWputZTObCTKuj03OBl8c8xUyVh2iWWMU_7smNbSGXKjrHkVCtvM2om5gl_btsoi3dKOGoPK5-JaMTY43KHOOiOsdhlnkeGSoW9HYHNxjrKED1Q" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="206" data-original-width="251" height="329" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEjGgznn4ETxLbaqpnH5WHGTDMrJP02xP-cBhY0esfwmzrUjLfiUR0afo7dEy1gpk3TizwbQGWputZTObCTKuj03OBl8c8xUyVh2iWWMU_7smNbSGXKjrHkVCtvM2om5gl_btsoi3dKOGoPK5-JaMTY43KHOOiOsdhlnkeGSoW9HYHNxjrKED1Q=w400-h329" width="400" /></a></div><p style="text-align: justify;"><span style="color: #666666; font-size: large;">Additionally, I was invited once again to enter the Hilton Head Garden Poster Contest and I have been working on a piece, Early Bird, for my entry. So one day last week, my husband found it on the floor near the outside door where they had dragged it! as though they were trying to take it away and make it one of their own! Needless to say I was horrified, although no damage done. Of course, neither one owned up! I had made a point to close my door but forgot that one time. font-size: large;">Google tells me that there are several problems with my Blog, but honestly, I don't quite understand - they tell me that the font is too small but I usually choose medium. Anyway so much to cover that this will be long.</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;">Anyway, since it has been a while since I posted, it's a good record to post on here so I thought I'd post a few pictures of what I've been up to lately. </span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;">I'm sort of in a dither because our new location of The Maye River Gallery is going to open in September in a beautiful new location on the same Calhoun Street but down a bit closer to the river across from the Montessori school, and during the nice weather I confess I wanted to be outside and spent a bit of time experimenting and doing botanic printing.</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;">At the same time, I was asked to help with a project for our Savannah Fiber Guild's 50th Anniversary celebrations so have been collaborating on that as well. It is going to be such a special catered party that we are all excited about and everyone is putting in so much effort for it to be a success. I'll post more about that as we go along but my part is creating a flower display - felted, stitched and other ideas that are going to be beautifully displayed on a botanically printed swag using a large moveable frame</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;"> Since we moved, my new dye space is in a tent and it has taken quite a bit of time for me to get organized because there are no shelves but I think I'm finally able to find things fairly quickly. I enjoy natural dyeing as well as synthetic dyeing and as you can imagine there is a lot that is needed - a myriad of dyes - chemicals, measuring devices, scale, pots (lots of them) including an electric turkey roaster, and a fish poacher that sits on 2 electric plates. Additionally, there are lots of wrapping rods and fabric to use for blankets (covering botanical prints to steam). I read a great tip on my FB group to use a large toolbox on a propane stove for larger pieces and my husband fit a way for me to load the pole for steaming - I have tried it and it really works well (my husband had to modify it so the steam wouldn't burn me) but have yet to try really large pieces. It will be given a test when I print the large piece for our guild's party in November. The weather will have cooled down by then.</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;">One of the things I had neglected to do earlier was make up some synthetic dye and dye a small piece to identify the exact color on the lid - this is only the beginning but it's an amazing help since I can see the shade without testing each one - there are so many shades of just blues!</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEith1N17hxwuSL-hnf591OL5aK7PR2q1nA1DSk8avXVEkMjiTQhn4rFzSP7N_pMVxFDinzLMhY_YKavs48p6Z8p3QRHjvZq7TEmofHGBuL14ly1KL-13C8TUCtyOoFq2-mcic4ferUYIsSsnoJOu085MsplJB7ADWZRruvQrHdQjwCTDd42NKU/s2048/synthetic%20dyes.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="978" data-original-width="2048" height="153" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEith1N17hxwuSL-hnf591OL5aK7PR2q1nA1DSk8avXVEkMjiTQhn4rFzSP7N_pMVxFDinzLMhY_YKavs48p6Z8p3QRHjvZq7TEmofHGBuL14ly1KL-13C8TUCtyOoFq2-mcic4ferUYIsSsnoJOu085MsplJB7ADWZRruvQrHdQjwCTDd42NKU/s320/synthetic%20dyes.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;">Now I need to get felting so that I will have enough supply for our new gallery! Before we moved, I had dyed a piece of silk that I fell in love with and had made a couple of smaller companion pieces in the same colorway. I didn't know what I'd do with them so kept them to just look at it until I decided. I wanted something that would work without cutting into the design too much. I love the challenge of using all of the cutoffs and I did just that by using them for the edges of sleeves, lapels and front. The companion pieces were used for the lining and, of course, I needed to add more in the appropriate colors. I posted these pictures a while back on FB but didn't include the lining which is quite interesting.</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;">Lining - silk organza, habotai, silk fiber and cotton.</span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixigGb3WjCAmZ8xG3EWMCbZ46VyPVGdEqbwGh3D3QVjJeECdchup2e6Owoncn1QtxMyfX6VEK5aYOos9bAVvkQJnVX1OnzytVd85_Muinset3bFpgyQofTPcSRqmYq9de-V4lXX_XmGcg-a6cM7AIeaQ7vhq65tZY_mxNxe4RKjiBe9zT27qk/s2048/resist%20dyed%20nuno%20felted%20vest%20lining.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEixigGb3WjCAmZ8xG3EWMCbZ46VyPVGdEqbwGh3D3QVjJeECdchup2e6Owoncn1QtxMyfX6VEK5aYOos9bAVvkQJnVX1OnzytVd85_Muinset3bFpgyQofTPcSRqmYq9de-V4lXX_XmGcg-a6cM7AIeaQ7vhq65tZY_mxNxe4RKjiBe9zT27qk/s320/resist%20dyed%20nuno%20felted%20vest%20lining.jpg" width="320" /></a></span></div><span style="color: #999999; font-size: x-large;"><br /></span><p></p><p><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHKWWz7pcPaqrdGUaMx457wBI-LcgBVv_Egg5Mn7J02QA6YV4o9uSt0ZYeoN0DqejRiS2r5Ek04q8gbOBr_rXMsDgVqiTR_rJdPydI5MkPzC8M6JF7wKR3bstNpKvGzN3OrNr8eUXOaK-byuW6yGSgXC4qZIsPNajZDb3CyYgF6KFLfskwHrg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="543" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEgHKWWz7pcPaqrdGUaMx457wBI-LcgBVv_Egg5Mn7J02QA6YV4o9uSt0ZYeoN0DqejRiS2r5Ek04q8gbOBr_rXMsDgVqiTR_rJdPydI5MkPzC8M6JF7wKR3bstNpKvGzN3OrNr8eUXOaK-byuW6yGSgXC4qZIsPNajZDb3CyYgF6KFLfskwHrg" width="217" /></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9I6KZ27_2vVFvtKiq0y1vsFVK-dJbUVJ1K9dBRYgGp0cvFUIlGXeeLAKDMmWsgB30oP5W4be7HHaNVKvvugzQK0xW0qQ2VQX0la2-E7-SJaBLRyMgMpdnrtPT2UeOTp333vZKzhPArCG0JlEuNXG0ydX8-oLoAU5mLbfKzEM-S7GkAopuM0c" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="" data-original-height="600" data-original-width="450" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/a/AVvXsEj9I6KZ27_2vVFvtKiq0y1vsFVK-dJbUVJ1K9dBRYgGp0cvFUIlGXeeLAKDMmWsgB30oP5W4be7HHaNVKvvugzQK0xW0qQ2VQX0la2-E7-SJaBLRyMgMpdnrtPT2UeOTp333vZKzhPArCG0JlEuNXG0ydX8-oLoAU5mLbfKzEM-S7GkAopuM0c=w300-h400" width="300" /></a></span></div><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Another piece of hand-dyed silk was created into a windowpane scarf</div></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUZLy383Du5Kwx-nOj7UxXO_SIFsfO9KzT3qUv9E6jifIE94PA_c0PV8z5s6_9FthL3S80zYpAl_7PRkByM7kpit64O8nymmxZ0YDdnFljjVhVqAL6ltjrdoVKaVHfj-kQVHHnfV6kiDS2-LMAVZ-34GWmySkTFGihZRcN-mJEWH1y9ycq6Jg/s2048/windowpane%20scarf.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhUZLy383Du5Kwx-nOj7UxXO_SIFsfO9KzT3qUv9E6jifIE94PA_c0PV8z5s6_9FthL3S80zYpAl_7PRkByM7kpit64O8nymmxZ0YDdnFljjVhVqAL6ltjrdoVKaVHfj-kQVHHnfV6kiDS2-LMAVZ-34GWmySkTFGihZRcN-mJEWH1y9ycq6Jg/w300-h400/windowpane%20scarf.jpg" width="300" /></a></div><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;"><br /></span></div><span style="color: #999999; font-size: large;">Alas, there is so much more, but that will have to wait for another day!<br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><br /><br /></span><p></p>margo dukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02094473794288191994noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21362050.post-7103160162223785282021-11-04T21:06:00.021-04:002022-06-18T15:05:57.835-04:00A WILD RIDE!<p><span><span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-size: medium;">A WILD RIDE & MORE!</span></span></p><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #999999;"><b style="background-color: white;">EXCITING NEWS! I was recently interviewed for 3 1/2 hours by a writer for the magazine 'LOCAL culture' The article will appear in their December issue. Carolyn, who works for LOCAL found my work in the Maye River Gallery and became enthralled with my felt-making. This magazine is top quality and is based in Hilton Head and distributed all over the low country. I am extremely fortunate and appreciative to be included in such a top-quality publication.</b></span></span></p><p><span><span style="background-color: white; font-size: medium;"><span style="color: #999999;">Oh, it's been a wonderful wild ride, moving from Habersham to Harbor Island for three mo</span><span style="color: #999999;">nths and then our little dream carriage house that is everything we want and need. We were supposed to stay there until January, but I wasn't paying attention and tripped and ended up with a broken left kneecap and a broken bone in my right hand a few days before Christmas - so that was the end of the beach as there were stairs leading up to the elevator that made it difficult to manage. Jenni and Dean to the rescue once again and we ended up in their downstairs master bedroom! The carriage house wasn't finished yet but by Valentine's Day - we moved in!</span></span></span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-size: medium;">Living right adjacent to our youngest daughter and family is so very special with our youngest grandsons so nearby. The littlest just drops in to spend time with his granddad to show him his experiments - at 7 he is quite the scientist and Win the eldest is so grown up now, so smart, and loves conversations with granddad too!</span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-size: medium;">We are so fortunate to enjoy our family so close. Our eldest daughter and husband just moved here a few weeks ago and are only a short ride away. Now we are hoping to see our son and daughter-in-law and the other grands in a few weeks, it has been too long because of the pandemic.</span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-size: medium;">Now that we are pretty much settled, I've been taking a couple of online classes - felted jewelry which was very inspirational and something new for me; in addition, since I love botanical printing, I decided to take a class using the heat press. With the heat press, there are no guarantees and there is quite the learning curve but the possibilities for creativity are endless so that has kept me more than occupied! In fact, my felt-making has taken a back seat for a while but since it is my first love, getting back to it is quite thrilling. </span></p><p><span style="background-color: white; color: #999999; font-size: medium;"><span><b>STUDIO:</b> My studio makes it so easy and enjoyable because I can see everything at hand in 'rainbow' form! On the top (which doesn't show in this picture) there are bins of yarns, on the next cubby down there are silks and velvets, everything from hand-dyed to hand-dyed (by me), and on the bottom cubby is the wool (and if course, there is more wool and silk in the adjacent drawers. It is such a pleasure to see it all at once without having to get it out of the attic. On the main shelf are a few of my machines - Babylock Embellisher and Imagine serger behind it, and my Brother PQ 1500 for free-motion stitching. Under my table is another Embellisher and my Pfaff 1475 that I just love because I can input text and stitch it out which I used for our grandchildren's baby quilts- it is way beyond even embroidery machines as it doesn't need a hoop. My embroidery machine, Elegante, is over at Jenni's and I</span><span><span> can access it whenever I want to use it. Then there are a wide variety of white silks, and fine types of cotton folded under the main shelf which is also easily accessed for felting, dyeing, or botanical pri</span>nting.</span></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMLXhCelCQY/YYRdnBxJmqI/AAAAAAAADpE/5aXLOf-EYMk-XBmXt3me9u1NUDMwos-HgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0295.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1536" data-original-width="2048" height="240" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-iMLXhCelCQY/YYRdnBxJmqI/AAAAAAAADpE/5aXLOf-EYMk-XBmXt3me9u1NUDMwos-HgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0295.jpg" width="320" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ooN9XTQTe98/YYRdnEbJWbI/AAAAAAAADpI/N4R1570EZrcCToojPc8BrwjywQSHdcLfQCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0296%2B%25281%2529.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-ooN9XTQTe98/YYRdnEbJWbI/AAAAAAAADpI/N4R1570EZrcCToojPc8BrwjywQSHdcLfQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0296%2B%25281%2529.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><p><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span style="color: #999999;"><b>FELTING</b>: I really had a hard time getting my inspiration back but I did just plunge in and make a couple of felted pieces - a vest and a wrap. It has tables and space under for all of my tools and chemicals. I have an outdoor closet for those things that need to be kept dry and out of the elements. I was too busy playing with my heat press to use it yet! One thing I learned, I had some synthetic dye made up before we moved and they have been in storage - I made the mistake of just shaking the dyes before using but I found out that over time that they got old and didn't realize that they had gotten dregs on the bottom - I ruined some silk which got splotches. I have already discarded most and need to make up new batches. Wow is all I can say! I became so enamored and played every day with a variety of paper and leaves - a whole new learning experience for me. Leaves that I learned worked with steaming did not necessarily work with the press but flowers were another story! I loved it so much that I got nothing else done and now have a variety of paper sizes to play with. Jane's mixed-media approach is fabulous and she delves into spackle, gold leaf, stenciling and the possibilities for enhancement are endless. To save myself, I had to sell my printer to a dear friend - I felt like I was parting with a favorite family member BUT after the show in early December that I will be part of, I will buy another; it will be a smaller version so I can store it more easily since extra space here is at a premium. Here are just a few examples with embellishments yet to come. To make things even better, I was invited by Jane to be part of her book! How exciting is that! So honored!</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AqZvvUZOb-s/YYRhJGHFh9I/AAAAAAAADpU/1kdBTtspUNIAAbxr7IavMT5tzSaGfdEdgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/FullSizeRender%2B%25282%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1557" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AqZvvUZOb-s/YYRhJGHFh9I/AAAAAAAADpU/1kdBTtspUNIAAbxr7IavMT5tzSaGfdEdgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/FullSizeRender%2B%25282%2529.jpg" width="243" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_9pgiOCN1Q/YYRhWEaYIPI/AAAAAAAADpc/8YYoSFsyt7InWRU_GN2gQGNpx7RP-djXwCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/FullSizeRender%2B%25283%2529.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1345" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-H_9pgiOCN1Q/YYRhWEaYIPI/AAAAAAAADpc/8YYoSFsyt7InWRU_GN2gQGNpx7RP-djXwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/FullSizeRender%2B%25283%2529.jpg" width="210" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xvAeSQOLNVM/YYRhnC3wrFI/AAAAAAAADps/q83QIN4liUQ1zutjhpkW_zsju8PAwsH8wCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_9502.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-xvAeSQOLNVM/YYRhnC3wrFI/AAAAAAAADps/q83QIN4liUQ1zutjhpkW_zsju8PAwsH8wCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_9502.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /></div><br /><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AEcl8bVQVhU/YYRhMfj43uI/AAAAAAAADpY/f7j5c1VMSDAZqkVvhbTB22EQT42c71JyACNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/FullSizeRender.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-AEcl8bVQVhU/YYRhMfj43uI/AAAAAAAADpY/f7j5c1VMSDAZqkVvhbTB22EQT42c71JyACNcBGAsYHQ/s320/FullSizeRender.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XXp3d919tCE/YYao3A1GPoI/AAAAAAAADq4/2Y6qm6VuZLkKgvAtMo9GAxGZ1170DKYaQCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0611.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-XXp3d919tCE/YYao3A1GPoI/AAAAAAAADq4/2Y6qm6VuZLkKgvAtMo9GAxGZ1170DKYaQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0611.jpg" width="240" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lFIhr4YigD8/YYao5gQrBBI/AAAAAAAADq8/wzN_plLg598A-DZcXUIIsG_L6QJNhDPoQCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0610.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1528" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-lFIhr4YigD8/YYao5gQrBBI/AAAAAAAADq8/wzN_plLg598A-DZcXUIIsG_L6QJNhDPoQCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0610.jpg" width="239" /></a></div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rP2Nh_J6nJo/YYao79dfgsI/AAAAAAAADrA/cDI100TaPactZHq-YYVclmfQO09OaKADgCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/IMG_0609.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1416" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-rP2Nh_J6nJo/YYao79dfgsI/AAAAAAAADrA/cDI100TaPactZHq-YYVclmfQO09OaKADgCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/IMG_0609.jpg" width="221" /></a></div><br /><div><br /></div><div><br /></div><br />margo dukehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/02094473794288191994noreply@blogger.com7tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-21362050.post-46167864809515421752021-03-16T13:07:00.001-04:002021-03-16T16:20:59.094-04:00CARRIAGE HOUSE<p><span style="color: #999999;">Slowly getting it all together. I have no new work to show at the moment, but I hope to change that very soon. My studio has not been set up - everything is stored in plastic containers waiting for the built-ins and then . . . . !!!</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999;">My muse has been like a butterfly - hibernating but getting ready to burst open!!! I truly do better with a challenge but all the creative energy has gone into decisions about decorating and how fun that has been. There are still a few finishes to be done on the outside - the overhang is waiting for its metal roof to be completed next weekend and the decks need to be stained. The amount of light in the house is incredible. It has been such fun to watch the progress from the ground up - truly a dream come true. We loved, loved our cottage in Habersham but the yard was quite large and as my husband was getting older, it was time to make a change. When this idea of a carriage house built next to our daughter and family came up, we jumped at the chance to be close to them and it is not too far from all of our wonderful friends. It is the perfect solution - it is small but it is just size for us and has a room for my studio - when we are finished with this - a dye shed will be next! How I miss my dyeing and leaf printing.</span></p><p><span style="color: #999999;">The front looks on to Jenni and Dean's courtyard and fire pit.<br /></span></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L1sQFc74PiY/YFDjCp676tI/AAAAAAAADlI/KR4-yvOMvigl95syBL-I7XbxpeKLdmNyACNcBGAsYHQ/s410/ourside.jpg" style="clear: left; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="410" data-original-width="400" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L1sQFc74PiY/YFDjCp676tI/AAAAAAAADlI/KR4-yvOMvigl95syBL-I7XbxpeKLdmNyACNcBGAsYHQ/w312-h320/ourside.jpg" width="312" /></a></span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="color: #999999;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ms-nUzmqRSA/YFDgVP4xd1I/AAAAAAAADkg/uv5jQ7nJB-IFuR4E_7vVp3mm2xrPT5qEQCNcBGAsYHQ/s400/french%2Bdoors.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="300" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ms-nUzmqRSA/YFDgVP4xd1I/AAAAAAAADkg/uv5jQ7nJB-IFuR4E_7vVp3mm2xrPT5qEQCNcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/french%2Bdoors.jpg" width="150" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CqHuDCPtetk/YFENhVUmjCI/AAAAAAAADlY/LUO1O_Ay4VUk6POmIKXPXJhI4ajcEZFOQCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/2BE5DB85-802B-41D7-B092-05C32492798F.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: left;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1536" height="200" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CqHuDCPtetk/YFENhVUmjCI/AAAAAAAADlY/LUO1O_Ay4VUk6POmIKXPXJhI4ajcEZFOQCNcBGAsYHQ/w150-h200/2BE5DB85-802B-41D7-B092-05C32492798F.jpeg" width="150" /></a><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">Our bedroom has two french doors leading out into what will become our bird and butterfly garden!</div><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">For the bathroom I used an old silk chiffon shawl that I dearly love but had developed a few holes so it was a perfect candidate for nuno felting the center - it turned out well and I enjoy looking at the soft peach with African violets</div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><br /></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eIkXPoDSgt0/YFEOn52OqeI/AAAAAAAADlg/jxMa70EcUdcVwdKFS2ogpHsW3B2CYRotwCNcBGAsYHQ/s2048/2A9D9425-995D-412D-8782-DDB3FFDDA2A6.jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="2048" data-original-width="1976" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-eIkXPoDSgt0/YFEOn52OqeI/AAAAAAAADlg/jxMa70EcUdcVwdKFS2ogpHsW3B2CYRotwCNcBGAsYHQ/s320/2A9D9425-995D-412D-8782-DDB3FFDDA2A6.jpeg" /></a><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-Ms-nUzmqRSA/YFDgVP4xd1I/AAAAAAAADkg/uv5jQ7nJB-IFuR4E_7vVp3mm2xrPT5qEQCNcBGAsYHQ/s400/french%2Bdoors.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: right;"> </a></div></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><br /><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KTPG4i15dGc/YFDh3lFuexI/AAAAAAAADlA/De9Vx7OOaRg5EvS32yFiO23OmRNgzw81wCNcBGAsYHQ/s400/favorite%2Bpot.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="400" data-original-width="300" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-KTPG4i15dGc/YFDh3lFuexI/AAAAAAAADlA/De9Vx7OOaRg5EvS32yFiO23OmRNgzw81wCNcBGAsYHQ/w239-h320/favorite%2Bpot.jpg" width="239" /></a></div></div></span></div><span style="color: #999999;"><div style="text-align: left;">My favorite pot! Not sure why other than just thinking about what our new normal is, makes me feel like I am in a dream that we are living in. Nothing in our lifetime has affected our total way of life like this has and it takes a bit to get used to it. Especially for folk like me that do well in a challenge or a deadline. For a while there, having all the time in the world has made me less creative although I was working on a few new things outside in undercover of the overhand in my dye shed. I do love working out there - it is my happy place for sure. Surrounded by the fragrance of the garden, smells of the pluff mud when it is low tide, and watching the birds dart in and out give me such pleasure, not to mention "Steve" our resident skink who scurries around from time to time - I scare him as much as he scares me. When I hear the little pitter-patter, I know he (or she???) is around. This skink is a reptile, - he has a colorful coat at times and a longish tail. I think he either lives under the shed or in the stone wall we built but even though I would never want to touch him, he is harmless enough and I'm sure joyfully consumes bugs so that is a good thing.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">In the meantime, I have decided to withdraw as a member of the Maye River Gallery at least temporarily because of virus safety concerns. The gracious ladies of the gallery agreed to have me there as a guest so I'm happy for that, as I really admire and appreciate them all.</span></div>

<span style="color: #999999;">This time, it is creating a donation piece for our local community. We have a very dedicated group of people who give of their time and resources to support a local elementary school and I like to contribute to the annual auction. While I am not quite ready to share pictures of my donation yet, I have already wet-felted the background of a wallhanging that is quite large. It has lots of texture including luscious curls and pieces of silk that I have either Sumi painted, dyed and or de-gummed. </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">I had an accident (won't go into details but suffice it to say, it held me back a bit) and it has taken a while and I am getting back to normal. I'm forever grateful to the ladies at the Maye River Gallery for their support and understanding - one in particular offered right away to take my place and work for me when I couldn't. </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">In the meantime, my Ya-Ya sisters (remember that great movie?) visited - we have been friends for 30+ years and saw that movie together years ago, we shared memories and had some great laughs. I made them each a fascinator and we had such a great time together reminiscing. </span><br />

<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">About a week later, our eldest daughter and her husband came to celebrate her birthday and it was magical indeed but never long enough so there hasn't been a lot of opportunities to work.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">Well back to the wall hanging: I do love details and finding just the right finishing touches is my job this week - since my piece does have some Sumi ink painted silk and was inspired by the Japanese textiles that I love so much, I want it to have lots of interesting things to look at but keep it simple at the same time. So the theme is nature although I haven't given it a title yet); my love of leaves will come into play once again. I experimented making skeleton leaves and would have continued today, except I ran out of propane for my outside stove. But can I say that I'm in love? oooh nature, nothing is better and I am so amazed that the color and the veins of the real leaves mimic my silk hankie maple leaf that I stitched some time ago - they will be incorporated. Of course, I had to add just a tiny touch of dazzle.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">And of course, I need to mention my teaching trip to Scotland - WOW!!! Such an exciting time and everyone was so kind to and made every effort to make a memorable time. My Heart Belongs to Scotland but I do LOVE the USA. </span></div>

<span style="color: #666666;">For the last few days, it's been an adventure creating the felt for the Tree of Life wearable art - still not sure what it will become but having fun with the colors and the details; yes I do get lost in the details. Its best not to rush it, but wet it down, let it dry and wait until the next day to determine what is needed. At the same time, I want to get to the cutting and sewing so I have to discipline myself to know when to stop!</span><br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<span style="background-color: #cfe2f3; color: #999999;">The inspiration for the next sample is this gorgeous piece of printed silk chiffon and since I love and appreciate trees so much, I decided that the theme for this garment will be named after this 'tree of life.' I felted a small sample and dyed some silks but since this is only the beginning, who knows where it will take me. I always love to work with fabric where I can use the front or the back after felting and cutting it up. My preference is to always begin with a monochromatic palette and then add punches of color so, in that vein, I overdyed several pieces of silk that I had in my stash in greens and turquoise.</span></div>

<span style="color: #666666;">So excited to have been invited by the Scottish Felting School to teach there in August. My Butterfly wrap was selected for my two days teaching at the school. I see lots of silk chiffon dyeing in my future - lots of blues and violets!</span></div>

<h2 style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #666666;">KLIMT VEST</span></h2>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666; text-align: left;">The week after the Felting School, I will be teaching what I love doing best. Creating felt, cutting up, then stitching creatively stitching together again. As always, inspiration comes from a variety of sources, I just have to begin working and then the magic begins. I had a piece of clothing from a thrift shop (yes, as a 'textile saver') I'm always scouring for interesting pieces of silk or blank linens to dye. </span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;">My inspiration for this vest came from one of Klimt's most favored paintings, 'The Woman in Gold.' As I studied it, I became very excited about the background; the detail is amazing and provides so many opportunities for inspiration. I decided to do swirls, 'eyes' and doodads of all sorts and it was such an enjoyable experience. If it was going in any way to represent Klimt piece in any way, it needed some gold, so out came my trusty old friend - Pfaff 1475 CD (creative designer). This machine came out before the popular embroidery machines and can perform all sorts of fun functions from inputting your own text, to stitching out fancy delightful stitches, either stand-alone or in a string. Gold metallic stitches were added for strategic touches and for the finishing touches, a piece of leather that had been dyed with flowers and it was just the perfect color with a silk covered wool ball button.</span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<span style="color: #666666;">The most difficult part was the swirls, created from a rolad of silk and wool, gently rolled to the pre-felt stage before being cut. That wasn't easy as I learned that the roll was way too thick to cut and made it really difficult to slice thinly enough - everything imaginable was tried from heavy duty rotary cutter to shaving with electric hair razor but by that time my fingers were yelling at me! However, I didn't panic but waited until the vest was finished before using my sharp little applique scissors to shave off the tops and that worked!</span></div>

<span style="color: #666666;">I've wanted to learn to print on leather since I first saw Bahar Bozaci's work late last year - I planned to take her Skype workshop but then I broke my foot and it wasn't possible; however, last week I had the pleasure of learning from Bahar and am thrilled with the results.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">Making the prints is one thing but creating something was something else. I'm not one to just blindly jump in, rather I read and ponder all the possibilities as well as gather recommended supplies. I was prepared to have to punch holes and do all sorts of maneuvers but this leather is so soft and my Brother Nouvelle 1500 did a superb job of sewing it; I'm just thrilled. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">Some of the supplies you will need are leather needles, plastic clips (you can't pin leather), double sided tape which was a godsend to hold pieces together. I bought the really thin tape which worked like a charm and of course some doodads to fasten things together - there is a myriad of choices out there so you just need to determine your function.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">So I made a bag and lined it with interfacing/bonded Dupioni - I don't think I would use that again, but I had it on hand but not in love with it, I will use something softer next time. Since it's for me, it's fine! </span><br />

<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">Since I was left with lots of scraps that were too nice to go to waste, I decided to do the same thing that I do with my leftover felt pieces and stitch them all together to make a piece large enough to make a wallet to match my bag! (Don't know about you, but whenever I get a new bag, I always must have a matching wallet</span><span style="color: #666666;">!) There were some holes to cover up and some strange angles. I wasn't sure how to do the lining since the leather is so thin it needed body; however, I knew that all those cutouts around the front edges would be a problem. The answer? why a piece of felt of course - felt doesn't ravel and I was able to cut around it. I had an indigo botanical printed piece in my stash, not quite the color I would have selected - but it was the correct size and for this purpose, it worked! I also added pockets inside for my driver's license, credit card, etc.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;"> Let me tell you, I really winged it as I had no clue how to do it but didn't want to waste those tiny pieces. The one problem that I had to overcome was that the magnetic closures I had would show on the right side - more scraps to the rescue, I just covered those areas up with another tiny scrap glued on. Since this is a learning experience, I will find out how the glue holds up and if I have to stitch later, no problem.</span></div>

<span style="color: #999999;">For the past several months, I've continued experimenting with machine knitting and figuring out the most professional way to put the pieces together. For my recent coat, since the knitted front panels were too narrow, I found just the perfect dyed lace, wool, and silk in my stash that matched the colors perfectly so I Nuno felted to add to the front sections; it turned out really well and I stitched them together using free motion stitching. I'm in love with it!</span><div>
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span></div>
<div>
<span style="color: #999999;">However, now that I have a better idea of how wide to knit the pieces next time, since I'm more interested in cut and sew for machine knitting than shaping on the machine, I did some research as to the most professional way to join the knitted pieces. Hands down, it appeared that the Hague linker is the way to go and I found one on eBay which was shipped from Nevada (they are manufactured in the UK). The seller has very good ratings and has been very responsive to questions, but something must have gone awry during shipping as it is hit or miss - sometimes the needle will catch the loop but more times than not and it just won't work properly. The seller even had a new needle sent from the UK to me but it is still not working. I'm really sad about this as I, as well as my husband, have spent countless hours researching and setting and resetting the needle so at this point unless I can get it to work, it will be quite useless to me. I will be contacting the seller to help come up with a resolution.<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<span style="color: #999999;">Sorry, it's been a while I know but October brought an unhappy surprise - a broken foot in a split second while out traipsing after Goldenrod of all things! So I did a lot of reading and knitting and then developed a trigger thumb from doing too much of that which although a bit painful, I thought was quite funny. In any event, I viewed those incidents more of an inconvenience since we all have friends/family that are dealing with a lot more than that. But an inconvenience it was because I wasn't able to do a lot of things that involved standing for too long and it was exhausting carrying the weight of that 'moon' boot around. Liberty feels good and makes me appreciate my good health so much more and makes me sad at the same time for those who can't rid themselves of their misfortune as easily. Christmas decorating and baking was quite the challenge.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">Just about everything in my life besides my most important thing of all - my husband and our family revolve around nature. Working with wool, leaves, natural dyes, mulberry paper brings me unending joy that I can't see will ever end until I do! The things that nature provides never cease to amaze - those little seeds; all that color, shape and form hidden in such a tiny space is really quite incredible when you take the time to think about it. Trees, have roots that follow their canopy and the veins in their leaves follow the shape of their branches - just think about how amazing that is. I've read studies where they have proven that tears can incorporate joy or pain and that water shows changes under a microscope once it has been blessed. Oh yes! there is so much more to life than we know and I find that thought very interesting and exciting. </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">Since October, there were things I couldn't do without further injuring my foot, so I reverted to learning my knitting machines which is a story all in itself. I acquired these machines when we lived in Maryland and still working full time so learning a little as time permitted didn't really do them justice - the older grandchildren were young and they enjoyed making their own scarves and also fighting over using the Embellisher - it was like a sweet little sweatshop factory in my studio on Sundays and we all had fun and hopefully they learned something and we made some lasting memories together - my job as a nana as I was so fortunate to have a Nana and Grandma that left some great ones for me.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">So back to the knitting machines - I have a Brother 260 and a Compuknit 940 (also a Brother) as well as a Garter carriage that truly knits on its own. Don't think for a moment though that this comes at all easy; I really don't enjoy or have the ability for technical things - they frustrate me. I'd much rather be felting or playing with color and texture but I am always up for a challenge! I really have learned a lot and am coming close to meeting my goal of knitting fabric to cut and sew.</span><br />
<br />
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sxaHs8yo_uw/XGyNRiZSykI/AAAAAAAADXc/Ol-x0hp8rt0zn2Oa8A0aW-Fz0kstsWo9QCLcBGAs/s1600/260%2Bresults.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-sxaHs8yo_uw/XGyNRiZSykI/AAAAAAAADXc/Ol-x0hp8rt0zn2Oa8A0aW-Fz0kstsWo9QCLcBGAs/s320/260%2Bresults.jpg" width="240" /></a><span style="color: #999999;">I knitted these panels on my Brother 260 which is a sturdy chunky machine. Although there are limits as to what yarn can be used, you can, however, use any and all yarns for knit weaving but for these panels, I used a punch card using Berroco Aurora Borealis #8014 and coordinated with Pea Pods cotton green. This created a really lofty fabric with cotton on the front and the mohair on the back - it will be very cozy. The fun thing is that because the Berroco is variegated, the little designs are too. When I began, I just knew I would be knitting panels but just wanted to see how the wool and pattern would knit but had no idea about what wearable design these panels would be. So, I had one larger long panel, two thinner. I didn't plan these very well because I would have been better off making two wide panels the same size and another for the sleeves. In any event, I bought up all in that colorway used it all up. Since there was no more of that colorway, I purchased another ball that I thought may be fun to coordinate with it in some manner (you can see the pink here), but they really didn't go well together with the violet/green/aqua hues so I used that for a lovely cozy cowl which is now at the Maye River Gallery. Hoping some Northern visitor will want it to take home.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">I looked at these pieces for a few days before deciding how to best use them and decided on a jacket.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">So, I stitched a fine zigzag before cutting the pieces up. One back panel, one panel cut in two for the fronts, and one panel cut in two for the sleeves. I did a lot of reading trying to learn the best way to finish the inside of the cut edge and the hong kong seam seemed the way to go; however, after doing an okay job with this at the shoulders because of the high loft and the difficulty of having the silk covering the seam move too much, I ditched that idea and decided to hand stitch. I can see a linker in my future if I keep on this path but I can't justify the expense at the moment. The next issue I will have to deal with is the front panels are just to skinny for my liking - even for a small person. I was just about to order more yarn when I had a bright idea - why not make some felt for the front edges which, if my idea works, will be a lot more interesting and I found the exact shade of merino wool that it needs in my stash - so wish me luck and keep tuned!</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">FYI and on top of all of that, I have become quite enamored with Fairisle Knitting and have ordered plant dyed wool in light and dark cochineal, logwood, weld and indigo which is coming all the way from the Shetland Isles to quench my thirst and I can't wait to get started. I have dabbled in it before but didn't have the correct weight. I have my graph all picked out and rather than practice on a scarf as was my first thought, I am going to make a cushion so that I can enjoy the results of my labor (and maybe see my mistakes too!)</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;">JUST in time to finish my post these came!</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<span style="color: #999999;"><a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7RNhAUddNp4/XGydcWXD58I/AAAAAAAADX4/pKdOM78Wi0claJyOpBOjleMAAt7zNX0CwCLcBGAs/s1600/shetland%2Bwool.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="960" data-original-width="720" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-7RNhAUddNp4/XGydcWXD58I/AAAAAAAADX4/pKdOM78Wi0claJyOpBOjleMAAt7zNX0CwCLcBGAs/s320/shetland%2Bwool.png" width="240" /></a></span></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span> <span style="color: #999999;">AND speaking of Fairisle, this is a small sample from the Compuknit 940 using Kaffe Fassett's Magic Ball technique - sooo many more possibilities!!!</span><br />

I always have so many projects going on at the same time and already my mind is conjuring up the next - for the past couple of evenings, I have been taking a little break from stitching my AC dress and began working on my 30 x 24 large felt piece 'Ocean Dreams' for an upcoming show at the Digital Corridor in Beaufort, SC, which will run from October through December - you cannot tell from the photographs but there are tiny clear glass beads stitched along the horizon (oh my poor eyes but it is so worth it!) I plan on adding lots more beads/embroidery and have begun outlining some of the waves too. I indulged myself by using some of my very special first cut kid mohair curls to add a frothy look. Perhaps it is the weather forecast, but if I wanted to, I could see a storm brewing out in the Atlantic but I'm sticking to my dreams of willing the storm away as I am so looking forward to teaching at Coastal Art Supply this Friday and Saturday.<br />

<span style="color: #666666;">Since I retired five years ago, I'm so fortunate to be able to focus on what I want. The only thing is that I enjoy so many crafts that it is difficult to decide sometimes just what is the priority. Somehow my creativity is given a push when I have a deadline such as a class or a show - the creative juices really get going then but the same problem exists (how fortunate to have this for a problem!) so I have resorted to 'mapping' rather than just prioritizing. Writing down my thought process helps clear my mind and helps me bring one or two projects to the surface. I like to think of it is as cream rising to the top.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">I met my friend Laura for lunch several months ago and mentioned that I wanted to start making my own clothes; she said she had thoughts along the same lines. Maybe it is my age or knowing that so many beautiful textiles are discarded and are piling up all over the world.- so I have deemed myself a 'textile saver.' In fact, there is a very special local resale shop and I talked to Beth, the owner, about my idea of forming a group to be associated with her lovely wares; she agreed that it was a good idea and I get to come up with a plan for her to approve! so now to convince friends and determine exactly what we can proceed! PS: I am amazed that Laura has created many AC projects while I am still working on this one! </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">So for the past few months, I have been taking several online workshops and also creating a dress from the Alabama Chanin books. Before we moved to SC, while I still worked, I purchased a Natalie Chanin class (jacket pattern came with the class) which I never made; AC wasn't so popular then and I was still trying to juggle work during the week and felting, dyeing and all the other things I love to do on the weekends, including our priority - being with the family.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">In any event, I have been working on this Alabama Chanin dress and although it still has a way to go, I find it a lovely soothing way to end the day, watching a program with my husband while stitching.</span><br />

<span style="color: #666666;">The bottom layer is a medium weight cotton knit dipped in indigo, the top is lightweight cotton knit stenciled with pearlescent grey. The pattern came from one of the AC books and I took it to have it enlarged. I also had the stencil enlarged and cut it out of pennant felt - took me two weeks off and on, not my favorite thing to do! My first attempt at stenciling was a disaster as the air gun kept getting clogged and the felt became saturated underneath - you can imagine the disappointing outcome. Next, I had to dye another top layer and stencil all over again. I used a sponge which worked much better. So here we are at the point where all of the main stitching is complete and I am enjoying the embellishment. The great thing is that when I need to move on to the next evening project, I can finish the dress and still work on it later! Oh, forgot to mention that I am going to add a ruffle to the bottom.</span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">The other workshops that I have been taking are from India Flint - the true guru of not only eco printing but of creative design. She has the most amazing creative ability and she has helped me think outside of the box. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">The first class was the Japanese bag and I was an eager participant. This large bag was all hand stitched boro style and I loved it so much; however, at an event attended, someone fell in love with it and had to have it - she was a very special talented musician and she loved it so I couldn't say no - so it went to a good home and I had all the fun of putting it together!</span><br />

<br />
<span style="color: #666666;">This is the back.</span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: #666666;">The latest workshop is named Conscious Clothing and as time permits, I've been working along on that. The idea is to use t</span><span style="color: #666666;">hrift clothing, cutting things up, redesigning according to India's gentle instruction bundling them and simmering in her 'magic' brew. So far I have made a cardi and a dress made a dress recycling an eco dyed silk dress and a knit top which when dyed together helps the colors all meld together.</span><br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jLgabsEnGW4/W5MakQ4f98I/AAAAAAAADWE/Zdx4gpxGQE8Jdtk7fuNhSc6UeN5fi4f1wCLcBGAs/s1600/cardi%2Breveal%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-jLgabsEnGW4/W5MakQ4f98I/AAAAAAAADWE/Zdx4gpxGQE8Jdtk7fuNhSc6UeN5fi4f1wCLcBGAs/s320/cardi%2Breveal%2B1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
The cardi was done first - top cut up the front and back, velvet stitched down the center back, avocado dyed Japanese silk panels added to the front, silk cowl from a blouse added as a collar and chiffon ties.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRnzdFKiikY/W5MaqibKpYI/AAAAAAAADWI/DaRJId6d6wg_ZXoOmBDKGnVccGTS7-ysgCLcBGAs/s1600/IMG_5039.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-jRnzdFKiikY/W5MaqibKpYI/AAAAAAAADWI/DaRJId6d6wg_ZXoOmBDKGnVccGTS7-ysgCLcBGAs/s320/IMG_5039.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
During the dress designing process - hmmm not sure where we are going yet, but trusting in the instruction.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gG7WeC92bYU/W5Mbv2Gvd-I/AAAAAAAADWY/Td2dZF5FHGIL0R_tffyWxZhHkDthiP3PwCLcBGAs/s1600/39799708_10204845129965711_9019476942742618112_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-gG7WeC92bYU/W5Mbv2Gvd-I/AAAAAAAADWY/Td2dZF5FHGIL0R_tffyWxZhHkDthiP3PwCLcBGAs/s320/39799708_10204845129965711_9019476942742618112_o.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
After simmering with leaves in the magic brew - the pink ended up matching the Japanese silk front panels on the cardi<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_hSCAhSMHM/W5Mb1hoqtHI/AAAAAAAADWg/hm4L-XTou-oO83BlkhPc698SyIi8GZ3awCLcBGAs/s1600/39875589_10204845129525700_1423368341036204032_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-j_hSCAhSMHM/W5Mb1hoqtHI/AAAAAAAADWg/hm4L-XTou-oO83BlkhPc698SyIi8GZ3awCLcBGAs/s320/39875589_10204845129525700_1423368341036204032_o.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
The skirt wasn't quite full enough at the sides and a little boring in front, so the class gave me enough confidence to cut up the sides and add other silk panels as well as a V-shaped felted portion below the waist<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rcBnXs96ucI/W5Mb4yjtvEI/AAAAAAAADWk/580NDY0vBVA6C2oAZ_jnIkUKS0_yfCD-ACLcBGAs/s1600/39610610_10204845130205717_6010211177701834752_o.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-rcBnXs96ucI/W5Mb4yjtvEI/AAAAAAAADWk/580NDY0vBVA6C2oAZ_jnIkUKS0_yfCD-ACLcBGAs/s320/39610610_10204845130205717_6010211177701834752_o.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">Once it was all dyed, it was amazing how the colors all melded and came together. So pleased!</span><br />

An experiment that I'm in love with - it will be perfect in the cooler months as it will be quite warm! I love the colors and how the rayon embroidery thread, stitched before felting, stands out and gives it a wonderful texture. Post dyeing and little stitching was done after the fact, just because . . . I do love to hand stitch! I will try this again in a lighter weight!</div>

<span style="color: #666666;">Trying to play catch up - so going to post pictures of news and work for these last few months. First let me say that I have been searching ever since we moved to Beaufort, SC, for a happy place that is a good fit for me and my fiber work. There really are a lot of galleries in Beaufort as well as Bluffon but mostly display painting, jewelry, wood turning and ceramics - I have tried a couple of those, but although they are really wonderful places to display art, my work was not a good fit. </span><br />
<span style="color: #666666;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #666666;">The exciting thing, is that I was invited to be part of the Maye River Gallery in Bluffton on Calhoun Street directly across from Spartina. If you know anything about Bluffton, you will know this is the prime location as there is a ton of foot traffic always and in winter there are a lot of tourists from up North so I am hoping that my work will appeal (and sell!) I have been very fortunate so far and have made my rent and some to spare so I am encouraged. Not only is the location great, but the 15 members who make up the artists in the gallery are among the MOST talented artists ever and they are so very kind and supportive of one another and of me, a new member who is is learning about all of the intricacies when I have to work (everyone works two days a month, it is a real blessing to be part of their family. http//:<a href="http://www.mayerivergallery.com/">www.mayerivergallery.com</a></span><br />
<br />
I think fiber lovers want to see and touch the textile - I know I do to enjoy the color and texture; this is one reason that I haven't done much with etsy although my studio was beginning to be overwhelmed with my work! I don't mind mailing things occasionally but I don't want to be making trips to the post office when I can be in my studio<br />
<br />
In any event, I confess to posting pictures mostly to Facebook - they make it so easy and I love sharing information and techniques with worldwide friends and learning from them as well.<br />
<br />
Now to what I have been working on: eco printing - always!, shibori, indigo, ice dyeing, joomchi still obsessed when I have the time and of course felt making. I have also become enthralled with Alabama Chanin so have been working on my first hand stitched dress using hand dyed fabric - bottom layer indigo, top layer logwood that has been spent but still gave a lovely creamy color. This top layer was stenciled using a huge stencil I cut out of pennant felt - ugh not a fun job (so I bought a Cricut for next time!) and used pearly grey for the paint. Each leaf/flower is hand stitched and then the center cut away leaving a margin (reverse applique). Yes, it is a lot of stitching but I love doing it for a couple of hours in the evening - find it very soothing. Two and a half panels done - one and a half to go!<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFMe4BjV8gM/W1TCGzENo-I/AAAAAAAADQo/dRbGQOckzLM7qgsOEfMj_-F6FGb6_0hYQCLcBGAs/s1600/Alabama%2BChanin%2Bdress.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZFMe4BjV8gM/W1TCGzENo-I/AAAAAAAADQo/dRbGQOckzLM7qgsOEfMj_-F6FGb6_0hYQCLcBGAs/s320/Alabama%2BChanin%2Bdress.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
Another thing I have been doing is taking a few classes from Botanical wizard, India Flint; she does possess a certain charm and her ideas are helping me immensely to think outside the box; her voice is sooo soothing, I love listening to her talk as the wind whistles, the fire for the cauldron crackles and the ocean in the background as she works. So all of these things involve hand stitching - no machine. I'm loving the slow stitching which is quite a movement at the moment and since I consider myself a textile saver, loving the thrift shop searching for just the right pieces to cut up and put together again in a different form before bundling - and then! there is always the great reveal<br />
<br />
I have taken all three (so far) of her workshops - Japanese Bags, Alchemist Apron and now Conscious Clothing - all of which are hand stitched, bundled and dyed.<br />
<br />
First the Japanese bags from India's Bagstories workshop using all sorts of fabrics and dyes.<br />

<br />
India's Consious Clothing workshop - great for a textile saver like me - this is just the workshop I wanted needed! I LOVE being immersed in these delicious decisions as to what, how to combine since I had no clue otherwise!<br />
<br />
The first picture is before the dye pot - a combination of all sorts of fabric and textures.<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2b6XA5NdEtQ/W1TOntzAIiI/AAAAAAAADRo/gdvxqovdYmgaPiiJoVcZNU7q2ohFBUO0gCLcBGAs/s1600/Cardi%2Bbefore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-2b6XA5NdEtQ/W1TOntzAIiI/AAAAAAAADRo/gdvxqovdYmgaPiiJoVcZNU7q2ohFBUO0gCLcBGAs/s320/Cardi%2Bbefore.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
This is the dye pot - what will happen?<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFy4W6mMrak/W1TOrP9kOKI/AAAAAAAADRs/Qk5akGajv182txOto5_yzAwGs-eh2H8kgCLcBGAs/s1600/cardi%2Bdye%2Bpot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DFy4W6mMrak/W1TOrP9kOKI/AAAAAAAADRs/Qk5akGajv182txOto5_yzAwGs-eh2H8kgCLcBGAs/s320/cardi%2Bdye%2Bpot.jpg" width="240" /></a></div>
<br />
The reveal before being rinsed - I'm just thrilled with the outcome; have since rinsed and it is a bit lighter. I will make a sleeveless dress next using the same techniques but all that work was so worth it!<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L58-3QORk6I/W1TOuR_iKcI/AAAAAAAADRw/XpZGuzVRcGAEcHUBDsPUFGBNSjPRypupwCLcBGAs/s1600/cardi%2Breveal%2B1.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1600" data-original-width="1200" height="320" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-L58-3QORk6I/W1TOuR_iKcI/AAAAAAAADRw/XpZGuzVRcGAEcHUBDsPUFGBNSjPRypupwCLcBGAs/s320/cardi%2Breveal%2B1.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>

<br />
<br />
In between all of this, we had some beach time at Harbor Isle, and our granddaughters visited from their farm near Gettysburg - they are grown now so they had a great time going to the dock and pool with some site-seeing and visiting thrown in as well. We also had a dye day because I wanted them to give them some lessons on indigo as well as ice dyeing.<br />
<br />
The girls at the Paris Market always a must visit in Savannah enjoying a lavender spritzer and macarons:<br />

Indigo - silly me forgot to take pictures and a huge box was shipped off to their home after they left!<br />

<span style="color: #999999;">I must confess - I love nothing more than to "putter." With my love of color, fiber and fabrics it is never a problem and always provides a 'high.' This could be looked at as a waste of time, but not to me. Since the New Year, I feel as though I'm hibernating and haven't had the interest to begin huge new projects so in the meantime, I must do what I do; I would go mad without having a color or fiber fix. I know from experience that this lull is a necessary restoring of energy that I think we all must do from time to time - a lot of it may have to do with all the energy expended prior to the holidays. There are ideas germinating but I don't really have the urge to go fast forward so I've been reading - a lot - an opportunity to catch up with my books and blogs and one of the most interesting things I came across on Pinterest is the Butterfly Pea Flower (Clitoria Ternatea). This is a flower that grows in Southeast Asia and the common name which I found fascinating is Asian Pigeon Wings belonging to the Fabascea family. Of course, I had to have some - you can make drinks and food that change color depending on the ph. and I plan to use it for this for special drinks and desserts! </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span><span style="color: #999999;">I freeze blue flowers to use for eco painting/printing and dyeing so when I found this recently, I was excited to try using it as a dye. It is such a pretty color, that I wondered about how it would work on paper and fabric so I tried on silk, paper and wool, mordanted and unmordanted and had a great time.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><b>Butterfly Pea Flower</b> is sold as a tea but can also be used to color food and drinks; there are several brands on Amazon, some more expensive than others. I steeped the flowers in hot water but I did read that it can be more effective heating with the microwave so I tried that and didn't find much difference.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><b>Experiment Conclusions:</b> </span><span style="color: #999999;"> </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><b>On paper:</b> <b>Blue</b> (lovely periwinkle color) using straight tea; <b>violet</b> when lemon is added; green when <b>baking soda</b> is added. I found that painting on after eco printing has interesting effects depending on the mordant used.</span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><b>On silk:</b> I had high hopes I could make this work by being patient and mordanting first. The most success I had was with Uzbec silk (unmordanted) which is very fine; the results were best when dipped, left for a while then steam ironed - I washed it several times and it kept its color;however, a ph neutral soap must be used for this or the color will change. When I tried habotai, the color didn't last. It looked beautiful at first but faded quickly. </span><br />
<span style="color: #999999;"><br /></span>
<span style="color: #999999;"><b>On wool</b>: I tried a scrap of prefelt - it did not hold the color at all</span><br />

I'm making a promise to myself to update my blog once a month if not more. It is a great way to keep track of what you have been up to when looking back. Facebook has become that, but posts and pictures tend to get lost in the shuffle and when you experiment as much as I do, it helps your efforts to become clarified - rather like making something that you are not quite sure of and leaving it for a while to come and revisit later.<br />

Our Fiber Group had a show and sale in Bluffton in early November at SoBA - it is a wonderful location for foot traffic - both for locals as well as out of town visitors. But the space is really too small for our needs. Although we love being there, we want to grow our fiber group; new members inject much needed inspiration, new work and new expertise which will keep us from getting stale so the need for a larger venue is one that our group spends a lot of time thinking and talking about. The members of our group are so talented with everyone having their own approach to working with fiber.<br />

This was created for an auction to benefit a local elementary school - it has a variety of locks, a felted flower and glittered feathers to add some 'bling.'<br />
